Active members shall have:
1. Successfully completed the full curriculum of a accredited orthodontic program
2. Be a member in good standing of the American Dental Association (ADA) if practice or residence in in the United States or one of its possessions.
3. Be exclusive in the practice of orthodontics
Affiliate members shall have:
1. Successfully completed the full curriculum of a accredited orthodontic program
2. Be a member in good standing of the American Dental Association (ADA) if practice or residence in in the United States or one of its possessions.
3. Not be exclusive in the practice of orthodontics

Academic-Foreign Trained shall be:
Active Members who are employed full-time in an orthodontic program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the ADA or the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada shall have the same privileges as active members
Honorary members:
To be an honorary member of this Association, an individual shall have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the art and science of orthodontics and shall be nominated by the Board of Directors or the General Assembly and be elected by the General Assembly.  A member who becomes an honorary member may retain all of the privileges of prior membership status.
Life members are:
An active member that has attained 65 years of age and has been a member in good standing for at least thirty (30) consecutive years.
Non-Resident members are:
1. A non-resident of this Association’s territorial jurisdiction may become a non-resident member of this Association on the following conditions:
    a. The non-resident applicant must be an active, affiliate, associate, academic or retired member in      good standing of the AAO constituent organization wherein the applicant resides or be a service member; 
    b. The application for the non-resident membership is approved by this Association’s Board of Directors.
Retired members have:
1. Have retired from the active practice of orthodontics
2. Have been an active or affiliate member of this organization for at least ten (10) consecutive years.
