The GLAO Distinguished Service Award recognizes a GLAO member who has served the Association in various capacities through the years in an exemplary manner.  The Great Lakes Association of Orthodontists is proud to present this year’s award to John R. Barbour, DDS, MSD of Carmel, Indiana.  This award is presented in recognition and grateful appreciation for his meritous contributions – both to the GLAO as an organization, and to the orthodontic profession in general.  His tireless efforts are deeply appreciated by his GLAO friends and colleagues.  This award was presented to Dr. Barbour at the GLAO Annual Business Meeting on Sunday morning, October 12th.

Dr. Barbour earned his undergraduate degree at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and completed his D.D.S. degree at the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1967.  Upon graduation he served on active duty in the United States Navy, and served one year with the U.S. Marines, 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam.  After completion of his military service Dr. Barbour returned to Indiana and was accepted into the Orthodontic program at Indiana University. He has been in the private practice of orthodontics since 1972 in Carmel, Indiana.

Dr. Barbour was a clinical instructor in the Indiana University School of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics from 1972 to 1979 and has participated in the Central Indiana Orthodontic Study Club, of which he is a founding member, since 1974.  He served the Indiana Association of Orthodontists for many years and was president in 1984.  He was the GLAO representative to the AAO Council on Communications from 1993 to 2002 and was chairman of that council for 2 years.  He has served as a delegate to the AAO House of Delegates for 11 years and was president of the GLAO in 1997.

Dr. Barbour has been happily married to his wife Gloria (
B.A. Ball State University) for 44 years.  They have four children: Jennifer (B.M.E.  Indiana University), Timothy, CPA (B.S. Indiana University), Brian, Attny. (B.A. Arizona State University, J.D. Brooklyn Law School) and Debra (B.S. East Carolina University).  All four are married and Dr. Barbour has 4 grandsons and 1 granddaughter.
